Granite-Effect Sill Restoration on a Full Elevation

Concrete sills that have taken twenty or thirty years of Northern Ireland weather typically present the same way: surface crumbling along the front arris where water runs off, staining and organic growth on the shaded openings, hairline crazing across the top face, and paint that has already been reapplied once or twice and is lifting again. The sills are structurally fine. What has failed is the surface and every coating that has been put on it. The question the owner faces is whether to keep repainting, or cut the sills out and make good the render and frames afterwards.

All loose, flaking and powdering material is removed back to a sound surface, and any lifting paint comes off rather than being coated over. Moss, algae and general soiling are cleaned off, which matters most on the north-facing openings where surfaces stay damp longest. Chipped arrises and lost corners are made good with a suitable repair mortar and allowed to set, so the sill profile is correct before anything decorative happens. Frames, glass and the render below each opening are masked, then the prepared sills are dampened and primed with a bonding primer.

The granite-effect finish is applied by steel trowel at roughly one to two millimetres over the primed sill, working opening by opening. Edges are dressed with a damp sponge while the material is still fresh so the front arris is clean and consistent from one window to the next, which is what makes an elevation read as deliberate rather than patched. Colour is kept identical across the whole elevation.

The sills are left with a hard, textured, water-resistant stone finish that runs consistently across the elevation, with no repainting cycle to return to. Because the sills were restored rather than replaced, the render and window frames were never disturbed and there was no making good to pay for afterwards.
